Woodland Walks - summer 2007
Monday, August 06, 2007.
Posted by Webmaster (on behalf of Woodlands Association) (eila@wemyssbay.plus.com).
The Woodland Association is running a number of Activity Sessions and Walks over the next couple of months. Some of the activities are aimed specifically at youngsters although they must be accompanied at all times by a responsible adult and indeed, they may need assistance in some cases, particularly with some of the clues in the Treasure Hunt.
There is a £1 charge for each event. The meeting point for all events is the Car Park at the Community Centre, Ardgowan Road, Wemyss Bay. For more information call Eila on 01475 529375. You are welcome to just come along on the day in most cases however spaces on the Bat Walks are strictly limited and must be booked in advance.
Wed 8th August 10.30am - Treasure Hunt: A morning of clues and activities for the young and the young at heart.
Sat 25th August 10.30am - Mini-Beast Safari: Things which are too small to notice can be the things which make a woodland work. Get up close to a selection of creepy crawlies and slimy beasties. Afterwards, make a hibernation chamber for lacewings and ladybugs.
Sat 8th September 8.00pm - Bat Walk: Come for an evening walk and find out about our local night-time wildlife. Learn how to use a bat-detector. (Booking essential)
Sat 22nd September 8.00pm – Bat Walk: Come for an evening walk and find out about our local night-time wildlife. Learn how to use a bat-detector. (Booking essential)
Wednesday 17th October 10.30am – Bird Feeders: Join us to spend a morning making a variety of tasty snacks for our feathered friends and then take a walk into the woods to place the variety of feeders ready for the cold winter months.
In addition to our walks, Lower Clyde Greenspace, part of Inverclyde Council, are running a Halloween Bat Walk on 31st October so, if you are not out Trick and Treating you can join them by phoning Joyce on 712464 to book a space.
The Association is continuing with its rhodi-bashing sessions in order to complete the clearance of the terraced gardens and surrounding area. The next session will take place on Sunday 19th August from 9.30am – 3pm. We are working in the triangle bordered by Ardgowan Road and Cliff Terrace Road and will meet at the Ardgowan Road end of Cliff Terrace Road. The next couple of sessions should form the final push to clearing the remaining rhododendron and we would welcome as much help as possible in order to finish the task as soon as we can. Please, please, if you have not been along before, or have not been recently, consider coming along and joining us. The half dozen or so regular volunteers are rapidly running out of steam, although, considering the amount achieved so far by a very few committed individuals, it is amazing that we have reached this stage already. It would mean a lot if you could show your support by joining us, if even for an hour or two.
We provide all the necessary tools, gloves, safety glasses etc and also provide refreshments and lunch. We do have gloves etc for small people so children are welcome to come along, provided they are accompanied and supervised at all times by a responsible adult.
We are aware that the area looks a bit desolate at the moment but take a look at the difference in the top wood where 2 years has seen the return of the native undergrowth and resulted in a significant increase in bird and animal life. Please be patient, the bottom wood will look great in a couple of years.
If you would like to be added to our email circulation list for early notification of what's on, please contact email: eila@wemyssbay.plus.com
I really hope that you can join us on one of our walks or at our work sessions. You will be very welcome and I look forward to meeting you.
Best Wishes Eila Roberts Wemyss Bay Woodland Association
